In this article, I want to show you how you can sell your Lightroom presets.
If you do not know, how to create a Lightroom preset or what is a preset, you can go to “How to create your own preset in Lightroom?” This is a step-by-step guide on how to create and save your presets Lightroom CC.
How to export your Lightroom presets?
After you have already created and saved your preset, you would like to export it, in order to be able to sell them. The exporting will create a specific format of the preset, which is only compatible with Adobe products. If you try uploading it to another software, it most likely won’t work. This format is called DNG (Digital-Negative-Format). This file helps you preserve all the edit changes you have done on your photo and allows the person, who acquires it, to use it.
Before going further, the first thing you would want to consider is how did you create your preset. Did you use the Lightroom desktop app or did you use Lightroom CC? (If you are wondering what is the difference, you can read about it here) This is very important, as unfortunately the cloud version does not support this feature. Therefore, you would have to use the Lightroom Classic.
Getting your edit settings synchronized
If you edited your photo directly in the Lightroom CC, then you need to start your Lightroom Classic (remember, this is the desktop version) and wait a few minutes, until all your data has been synchronized. However, this not relevant, if you made the changes directly in the Classic version.
Step 1 – Synchronization
I already made my changes in the mobile version, so I need to get the two programs synchronized. Important: Make sure that you are signed in in both programs with the same account. Once in the Desktop version, click on your name in the upper right corner and press the play button to initiate the synchronization. For me, this has already happened, so I have only a pause sign, which is used to put the synchronization on hold.
Step 2 – Export to DNG
After you have found the edited picture, simply to the Menu and then click on File > Export with Preset > Export to DNG. Then choose, in which folder you want this photo to be saved.
Step 3 – Open File Location
Once you have saved your photo, open it’s file location and you should be able to see the photo as a DNG file.
Selling your Lightroom presets
There are a few options you can consider, when creating your selling strategy.
If you already have your own website, you can try converting it to a Web shop, just by installing an eCommerce plugin. This will give you the opportunity to sell your digital products – in this case – your presets. There are different plugins that you can use, but the most popular one is WooCommerce.
Using an eCommerce platform
If you are just starting and you do not have a website, you can try registering to already exisitng eCommerce platforms and set up your shop there. One popular online shop is Etsy. It provides you a great user base, various technology tools to manage your account via different devices, safe and secure payment methods and many many more valueable features.
However, depeding on your geographical location or selling preferences, there might be other companies that better fit your needs. Therefore, before opening your account you might consider also the pros and cons of other portals.
