I would like to dedicate my first post to something not everyone is familiar with or at least not in Europe. I was also clueless to what this thing was, until my boo brought it home after his vacation in Japan and gave it to me as a New Year’s present.
As Japan is still one of my unexplored countries, I was quite surprised when I received it. It was the cutest little thing – handsized, white and gold bag, sparkling in the sunlight… Just what a girl needs!
He told me the that these little bags are called „O-Mamori“ and can be purchased from every temple during the New Year holidays. All over Japan, people buy them for protection or as a good luck charm. He knows that I have quite the bad nightmares sometimes, so he brought one home to keep me safe and scare away the all the bad things. The perfect present!
This got me interested so I looked it up on the internet. The word „Omamori“ can be translated as an amulet (for protection) or a talisman (for luck). But the essence of the word means „to guide or to protect“. Over time, new kinds of O-Mamori were developed and today there is a wide selection of charms to choose from. There are charms for success, love, traffic safety, studying and so much more. But the most important thing is NOT to open an Omamori after it has been given to you, as it is believed that the blessing will be released and the seeked protection will no longer be there.
If you want to know more, I think this article summarizes it quite well.
So if you are searching for the perfect gift, I believe this little bag of joy would do the trick! It does not only show that you are interested in the well-being of your loved one but also that you have gone out of your way to find the perfect match!
